This guide walks you through the steps to upgrade from **Refined Toolkit (DEPRECATED)** to **Refined Macro Toolkit**. Refined Toolkit is currently in basic maintenance mode and is planned to be retired by the end of 2026, so upgrading now helps ensure you continue receiving improvements and support.

The new **Refined Macro Toolkit** includes the familiar macros along with additional improvements - all at the same price.

This may seem like a lot at first, but the upgrade follows 5 clear steps:

1. Choose your billing option
2. Confirm which Toolkit app(s) you need
3. Review the functionality differences
4. Upgrade the app with Atlassian
5. Return to Refined to complete the license alignment or refund

> ℹ️ If it feels like a lot, feel free to [open a support ticket in our portal](https://help.refined.com/portal/13) - our team is here to guide you at any point.

<summary> Step 1: Choose your billing option</summary>

To switch from Refined Toolkit to Refined Macro Toolkit, first choose how you want to align the new app with your existing Toolkit license:

**Option A - Trial alignment **
We help you to extend the Refined Macro Toolkit trial license so it works as a full license until the end date of your current paid Toolkit license. At renewal, you continue only with Refined Macro Toolkit.

**Option B - Refund **
You purchase Refined Macro Toolkit, and we approve a partial refund for the remaining time on your current Toolkit license.

Please choose the option you prefer before continuing.

<summary>Step 2: Choose the new Toolkit app(s) you need</summary>

Depending on how you use Refined Toolkit, you may need to install only **Refined Macro Toolkit**, or both of the new apps:

- **[Refined Macro Toolkit ](https://help.refined.com/space/MACROTOOLKIT/5635604632/Macros)**– includes **Content formatting macros.**
- **[Refined UI Toolkit (free app)](https://help.refined.com/space/UITOOLKIT/5628854324/Get+started)**** **- adds **Navigation menu** and **Page Builder macro.** UI Toolkit is a free companion app. It can be installed after removing the deprecated one, and requires no license action.

Example:

If you use the Page Builder macro in the deprecated Toolkit, you will need both apps, because the Page Builder macro is a part of the Refined UI Toolkit functionality.

Please confirm which functionality you need, before proceeding.

<summary>Step 3: Review functionality differences</summary>

Review the functionality differences in our [Toolkit FAQ](https://help.refined.com/space/TOOLKITCLOUD/5683937411/FAQ+Toolkit), which outlines several changes related to theming, custom code, and the updated look and behavior of some macros.

**Common case:**

The **Page Builder macro** is now part of the free **Refined UI Toolkit** app. Content added with Page Builder on restricted Space Overview Pages requires a small manual step during the upgrade.

> ℹ️ Before upgrading:
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - Please identify any restricted spaces where Page Builder is used. If you are unsure where Page Builder is used, don’t worry - we can help you checking this [here.](https://help.refined.com/space/TOOLKITCLOUD/6401130533/Restricted+spaces+during+a+Toolkit+migration)

<summary>Step 4: Install the new Toolkit app(s)</summary>

Once you have chosen your billing option and confirmed which Toolkit app(s) you need, you can proceed with the installation. Here’s how to get started:

1. **Contact Refined via support portal to:**
- request formal approval for deactivation of current paid license and trial extension (Option A - Trial alignment)
- request refund approval (Option B - Refund)
2. **Contact Atlassian with your request to unsubscribe your license. **

We cannot bypass this step due to Atlassian’s license management rules.
Use the correct template to contact Atlassian:
**[Option A – Trial alignment template](https://help.refined.com/space/TOOLKITCLOUD/6723829763/Template+to+contact+Atlassian+-+Trial+alignment)**
**[Option B – Refund template](https://help.refined.com/space/TOOLKITCLOUD/6724812801/Template+to+contact+Atlassian+-+Refund)**
3. Add Refined (<u>[teamsupport@refined.com](mailto:teamsupport@refined.com)</u>) to your Atlassian ticket to make sure your request gets approved. You can agree with Atlassian on a suitable time slot for a short downtime.

**Downtime only happens between uninstalling the old app and installing the new one. **
Your data will not be lost.
No changes to your content are required.
4. Wait for confirmation that your old Toolkit license has been unsubscribed or will be unsubscribed at agreed time.
5. Once Atlassian confirms the old Toolkit license has been unsubscribed (or will be unsubscribed at certain time), you can uninstall the old app.

> ⚠️ **Important:** Downtime begins at this point and lasts until the new app is installed, but your data will remain safe.

6. Install the app(s):
Refined Macro Toolkit for Confluence
Refined UI Toolkit for Confluence if needed

<summary>Step 5: Back to Refined!</summary>

**Option A - Trial alignment:**

- Send the new Macro Toolkit license ID to Refined Support team (This step is not needed for UI Toolkit, as it is a free app)
- Once received, Refined will confirm **the trial extension approval **in your Atlassian ticket (from Step 4), so the trial license aligns with the end date of your existing paid Toolkit license.
- Atlassian will then update the trial license end date.
- Done!

**Option B - Refund:**

- Contact the Refined Support team to confirm that the old license has been uninstalled and that you would like to proceed with the refund.
- Refined will add the **partial refund approval** to your Atlassian ticket (from Step 4).
- Atlassian will then process the refund.
- Done!
